The Factory of Conformity

VR Project

The player enters a desolated factory where disassembled parts of enigmatic objects are scattered, and colossal figures, as if not living, are seated in rows, maintaining a perfect alignment. The player roams among the alignment, seeking out a unique figure and questioningly ventures to examine the giant. All of a sudden, one of the giants breaks apart, coming out is a human with its own will emerging from within. Both the player, observing these identical beings, and the giants, awaiting delivery, are surrounded by nothing but an overwhelming dead silence in this space.

The artwork reflects the mindset of individuals in their twenties and thirties in Korea, shaped by an educational system that is intense, achievement-driven, and ultimately revolves around the public notion that success is defined by attending university, securing a position in a large corporation, and leading a stable life. The work critiques the idealized life in Eastern societies, where coerced-homogeneity reigns over experimentation and individual challenge, and where everyone is striving toward the same goal. Through the collective of giants, the artpiece encourages a reflection on the tension between a uniform ideal and the unique value of the individual. It urges invitees to reconsider the choices and actions necessary to break free from this rigid system and to reflect on the need for personal agency in the face of societal expectations.
